We are grateful to have you alongside us in support of our mission to preserve, protect, and promote the industrial, commercial, and cultural heritage of the Mustill Store Museum and our Park which includes locks 10 – 16 along the Ohio & Erie Canal. Below outlines the volunteer roles and descriptions.
Volunteer Roles Include:
Our doors would not open if it weren’t for our Volunteer Store Greeters! The store greeter is the first point of contact the public has with us and it is important that they know we are happy they stopped in and we are available for questions and can share fun facts about the area.
If you enjoy people, and want to learn more about the canal area, the Mustill Store, and the significance that the Ohio & Erie Canal had to Akron and the State this is the position for you!
No prior knowledge is required.
The Mustill Store Museum is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Memorial Day to Labor Day and Saturday and Sunday April, September, and October.
The Store hours are 10am-4pm and the shifts are 3 hours each, 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 4pm. At least 2 store greeters is required on each shift.
Responsibilities include:
Greeting visitors
Light sales of books, beverages, etc.
Assist with store opening and closing duties when needed
Museum Store Greeter
Special Events Volunteer
A special events volunteer can include a number of duties to assist with planning, executing, set up, and tear down for special events. Special event volunteering is generally a 3–4-hour shift and may include shift hours before and after the event for set up and tear down. Events include but are not limited to Akron’s Sakura Festival, Opening Day, Canal Clean Ups, On Site Weddings, Free Lunch Fridays, Duck Derby, Jazz on the lawn, just to name a few.
The needs and duties for event volunteers vary by event and can include:
Early set up and/or after event tear down.
Mingling with visitors encouraging event participation in activities.
Overseeing or participating with event tables like – kid’s activities, crafts, and games
Event maintenance – manage trash, supplies, signs, etc.
From time to time our events will need additional resources and skills and by recruiting our members and volunteers to share their talents and skills to join us in the planning to maximize our quality and productivity on special projects.
